More Than a Little Uncomfortable
The last time I stepped into a Xn (Christian) bookshop would have been in the 1980s, while I was a theology student. It felt very strange to enter one this morning. Why did I do so? I have received notification that I am accepted into a te reo Māori course here in Whakatū (Nelson) and I was eager to begin working on my te reo.
Learning Languages with Xn Scripture
When I was an undergraduate theology student, I translated the Bible from German to English (this was before the Internet as we know it). When I later began studying Spanish, I spent hours listening to the New Testament in español. Because I had read the English version of the Bible hundreds of times, it was easy start reading it in other languages, as I was able to guess a great deal of vocabulary from my knowledge and the context. I did the same thing today (even though I haven’t opened a Bible since 1992), as I began reading Ngā Waiata (the Psalms).
The first Bible in this atheist’s home in several decades! The text isn’t terribly interesting (people who claim the Xn scriptures are some of the most interesting texts ever written generally haven’t read very widely), but it reminds me of my youth.
