Gods versus God
You will find me using “gods” over the term “god” when I actually bother to use this term. Why? There have been hundreds of millions of deities in the history of our species. Monotheism is the exception - and arguably a way to centralise power in a few individuals. When I was an undergraduate, I remember a discussion of 32+ million deities in India alone, so after that, whenever someone referenced god, I had an urge to say, “Which one?”
Questions About Belief
If you are the sort of person to ask another if they believe in god, you are stuck in a small mindset. The question is too vague to have serious meaning, or to warrant a serious reply. Are you talking about the deity of Christianity, of Jews, of Islam or something else? It could be argued that each person has a somewhat different concept of their deity, so even within these limited systems, what is being discussed is not clear.
I could say, “Do you believe in Steve?” You would probably have too many questions to be able to answer such a vague question. Besides for establishing who Steve actually could be, the return question then becomes, “Why do you want to know?”
Not Limited to Narrow Monotheism
So, if you see me referring to gods, you will have some context for my use of this term and, yes, the singular form is not capitalised for a reason.
