What it Means to Worship
I have been thinking a great deal about the divine lately, as well as what it means to worship. The divine is all sentient life, so how do we worship? A few things come to mind.
Focused Attention
Giving your attention to others is a form of sharing in the divine of both of you and a form of worship. You are aware of yourself and your surroundings and they of theirs. When you focus on them, you are giving part of your own divinity to them and - if they focus on you in return - they are giving part of their divinity to you. This is the universe in communion with itself.
Providing Strength
When another is suffering and you give of yourself, be it your attention, your strength, your support, you are sharing of your divine nature to strengthen the divine in others. This is a very powerful and honourable experience to support the divine in another. There are too many ways to do this to mention here, but one example will suffice. When I counsel another, I am in their space. I am giving of myself. I am supporting them in time of need. This is a humbling experience and a great honour for me.
In Song
Have your ever sung to another person or perhaps an animal? This is the universe in song to itself. If your intent is to inspire, encourage or bring joy to another in song, this is a form of worship.
Empathy
When you develop and experience empathy, you are reaching out to other divine life - trying to understand their divinity, their own experience. Empathy scares some people, as they think they will lose themselves in this experience. This will not happen, but the fear is your spirit shrinking from the power of its own divine nature.
The examples above are not exhaustive. Creating art to share and communicate to others is another form of worship. To write a poem, for example, to share with the world is an act of worship.
Your Life is an act of Worship
You do not need a building, protocols, nice clothing or any such superficial things to share in the worship of the divine. You - with your heart open - are enough. Come, let us worship together!
