I have been reading about Simone Weil for about a week now. I came across a reference to her while I was reading Existentialists and Mystics, as she was an influence on Iris Murdoch. A few things were going on in my life to bring me to a point where I was open to what Simone has to say. I was thinking about what belief means separate from the object of belief - that is, what does believing do for a person, regardless of whether there is any “reality” to the object in which they believe. Second, my mum died on Xmas/Boxing Day and I was open and vulnerable. There was a convergence of thoughts and feelings in my life and there I found Simone.
Also, influenced by my studies of Buddhism, I have spent some years thinking about how we approach new things - how open is our minds, how quick are we to apply labels and squeeze in things into former categories, etc. Simone’s focus on attention fits nicely into what I have been considering.
What does all of this mean? That is still in development!
